I’m A Sucker For Abstract Prints And Classic Silhouettes

…if you couldn’t tell by my infatuation with Lietmotiv A/W 2011.  So of course I love just about everything Erdem has put down the runway in the past two years.  Erdem’s A/W 2011 collection, with its subtle metallics and elegant elbow-length gloves, especially blew me away.  The clothes are a bit mature–unsurprising from a line favored by Michelle Obama–but if I were going to veil my entire body in fabric, I would choose to do so in Erdem’s distorted florals and perfectly draped velvets.  Plus there is absolutely nothing matronly about the funky painted ankle booties!

The Best Bathing Suits of Spring 2011 and Not A Bikini in Sight

This week I bought an only-my-answers-should-stand-out business suit and it was a grim day for my closet.  To ease my fashion woes, I have since been focusing on a different suit for a different season.  Behold: the top stand-out-in-a-stylish-crowd bathing suits of Spring 2011, one-piece and monokini edition.

1. Belted Monokini.  Rosa Cha, $391.

2. Bianca Monokini.  Freepeople, $168.

3. Whisper Underwire One-Piece.  Zimmerman, $345.

4. Cosette Cover Up.  Diane von Furstenberg, $185.

So it’s technically a cover up.  But I say looks like a bathing suit, worn like a bathing suit, waterproof like a bathing suit–it’s a bathing suit.

5. Fringe Benefits Suit.  L-Space, $120.

6. Plunging Sheer-Strap One-Piece.  Oscar De La Renta, $490.

What Holly Golightly would have worn to the beach this spring.

Leitmotiv A/W 2011.

Italian pattern masters Juan Caro and Fabio Sasso launched Leitmotiv in 2007 and consistently produce wearably decadent collections–the shapes are on-trend, the patterns luscious, the combinations delicate and the textures sumptuous.  Leitmotiv’s A/W 2011 collection is particularly relevant in light of 2011′s no-holds-barred mix-and-match trend.  From vibrant floral patterns to middle eastern skylines; from surreal Bengal tigers to swaths of Italian baroque filigree, Leitmotiv showcases an impressive (if scattered) range of design history and techniques in their collection.  Yet, painted with subdued colors and governed with impeccable taste, it is far from busy.  Refined but not without humor–gotta love the well-placed antlers!–Leitmotiv A/W 2011 is a beautiful example of truly inspired creativity coupled with adept editorial restraint.

Acne Resort 2011. All Hail 70′s Western

If any one collection is going to inspire my transition looks this spring, it’s going to be Acne Resort 2011.  Acne perfectly captures this spring’s defining 70′s retrospective and incorporates a Ranchero vibe to produce chic, downtown looks.  As Maddie Ross belts her father’s coat, dons his hat and looks surprisingly relevant to the present day in the Cohen brothers’ True Grit, so Acne takes masculine clothes from a trecherous time period and makes them contemporary, feminine and badass.

Perhaps the most innovative element of Acne’s collection is their feminine take on the leisure suit.  Somewhere between Shampoo and a speakeasy, these suits are fabulous, and model Yulia Lobova’s attitude is dead on.

The Halston-influenced diamond-shaped dresses are another highlight.

Nearly Identical… If Less Scandalous.

Mod Cloth’s Shangri-La Skirt is the lined, black version of the maxi skirt of my dreams.  Does this make me contrivedly hipster?

Mod Cloth’s version features an elasticized waist, making their skirt more forgiving than the tightly-fitted skirt I patterned.  If you want to make this maxi skirt, try following my pattern with these edits:

1. Instead of inserting darts, make the circumference of the top of the skirt just big enough to slide over your hips.

2. Create the waistband ala these directions from eHow.com

-Cut the elastic between 1 and 4 inches shorter than your waist measurement. You need to have it smaller so that it fits snugly and won’t be uncomfortable.

-Cut a casing three times wider than the elastic, or at least enough to give plenty of room to fold over with the right sides together and stitch the bottom closed. Leave the ends open.

-Turn the casing right side out.
-Hook a safety pin to the end of the elastic and slide it through the casing.
-Push material on the end of the safety pin and then, from the outside, grab the end material and end of the safety pin and push the material down over the attached elastic. Do this until you have reached the other end of the skirt.
-Secure the elastic in place 5/8 inch from the end, tacking in place on one side of fabric of the casing.
-Sew the casing onto the skirt, stretching it as you go.
Ta-da!  The maxi skirt of your dreams AND you can eat a burger in it.
